Genuinely Em
Hi Emily! Can you tell us a bit about you and your business?
“After graduating, I still wasn’t sure how to make sewing and fashion my job. Sewing was still a huge part of my life, but more as a hobby. When I was younger, I thought I wanted to be a teacher. This is probably why it felt so natural to begin teaching my friends to sew. I slowly realized I could teach more people to sew and show them how to use my sewing patterns.
The first pattern I ever sold was a one-piece swimsuit. Then, I created a circle skirt pattern, and many more after that. It became more apparent to me that the sewing world was huge and there were so many people who wanted to sew nice patterns.
Genuinely Em is now my full time business. I create size-inclusive sewing patterns that are ideal for sewists who love feminine designs and are perfect for wearing to brunch or on coffee dates. This year, I have also started helping new sewing pattern designers navigate creating and launching their own patterns by offering patternmaking and grading services. And, later this year, I’ll be releasing a book about creating and selling sewing patterns.”
